In its first three years, Portainer has experienced staggering global uptake of its Open-Source product, with hundreds of thousands of active users and many hundreds of millions of downloads. Now we're making the transition to our first commercial product, backed by an incredible group of global investors.

To help us bring our vision for Portainer to life, we're searching for a well-qualified DevOps Engineer who sees the opportunity to grow with us.

Who and What?

We are looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to own the ongoing maintenance and development automation toolset, testing platforms, and other related activities (see details below).

For this to be the right job for you, you will need to have experience in the ownership, ongoing maintenance, and development of Portainer's: -

  • CI/CD Automation Toolset, including the mechanism for creating images encompassing Linux x86, Linux ARM/ARM64, and Windows x86, and the ephemeral environment used for PR testing (currently using pull-dog).
  • Testing platforms, including automated creation/deletion of stateless testing landscapes spanning Docker, Docker Swarm Kubernetes, in both Windows and Linux variants.
  • HELM charts, Kubernetes manifests, and compose files that allow users to deploy Portainer.
  • Deployment "convenience scripts".
  • Infrastructure (currently composing API servers, downloads site, license server, demo site, documentation site).
  • Container image repository (currently Docker hub).
  • Cloud subscriptions (currently, Azure subscriptions, Digital Ocean Subscriptions, AWS Subscriptions).
  • Internal IT systems (e.g., Office 365, Dropbox, Slack), and:
  • Ownership, ongoing maintenance, and development of the e-commerce integrations between HubSpot and FastSpring.

The critical KPIs for the role include: -

  • The implementation of an automated/reliable CI/CD system is implemented that provides the developer's needs.
  • 99% availability of our infrastructure.
  • The implementation of a testing platform that allows developers and testers to instantiate clean environments on-demand, and.
  • A deployment mechanism for Portainer that is reliable, easy to follow, and well maintained.

This role will require someone specific skill sets, which include:-

  • Knowledge of Azure DevOps
  • Docker Image Building (using buildx)
  • Cloud Automation within highly dynamic testing environments spanning Windows and Linux)
  • Docker/Docker Swarm and DockerHub
  • Kubernetes
  • GitHub
  • Raspberry PI


Portainer is a global company with employees spread across the world. However, we would prefer candidates who can work out of our Auckland offices on a flexible basis (one to two days a week)


Portainer is already growing rapidly; however, we're still very much in our infancy. We are hugely excited about our launch into the commercial world, and we believe we're at the start of a wild ride.
